Today, many people are showing increasing interest in correcting wrinkles and folds, shaping facial contours and augmenting the lips. With Restylane, you can offer your patients a complete solution for tissue-tailored facial augmentation – a natural beauty lift using the body’s own material.
Restylane is a crystal-clear, biodegradable NASHA (Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid) gel, which is injected into the dermis in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. The result is instantaneous, producing a long-lasting, natural enhancement, gentle and safe to the skin.
There are three different types of Restylane products depending on the viscosity of the gel: Restylane Perlane (thicker gel used in lip and facial augmentation), Restylane (slightly thinner used for smoothing out wrinkles in the upper lip, glabellar and frontal regions) and Restylane Touch (thinnest of the gels, used for fine wrinkles, for instance the crow feet around the eyes).
Since it was launched in 1996, Restylane has undergone extensive histological and clinical studies with an increasing body of evidence relating to its ease of use, tolerability and effectiveness. Today, more than one million treatments have been successfully carried out worldwide.

How does Restylane work?
Smoothing wrinkles:
As we age, the hyaluronic acid in the skin diminishes as cells lose their ability to produce it. As a result, the skin becomes drier, thinner and less able to restore itself after squeezing or indentation. The loss of skin fullness also means that the skin becomes looser. All in all, these factors lead to wrinkling and an older appearance of the skin.
Smoothing out folds and wrinkles by adding volume can make an enormous difference to a patient’s appearance and sometimes make them look several years younger. With Restylane, you can offer facial rejuvenation without the use of foreign elements.
For the treatment of wrinkles or folds, Restylane is injected into the skin in small amounts with a very fine needle. The injected gel gives natural volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. The results can be seen immediately. Treating wrinkles with Restylane is fast and safe – and leaves no scars or other traces on the face.
Sculpting lips:
For many women, a fuller, more sensual mouth comes high on their wish list. With Restylane, you can offer a more pronounced mouth or a soft pouting look using the body’s own material.
Lip augmentation is usually carried out in two steps pouting and contouring. To create a more pronounced mouth and fuller lips, Restylane is injected into the upper and/or lower lip. This is often combined with the marking of the vermilion border by injecting the gel along the lip line. Redefining this edge leads to a more youthful and appealing look. The philtrum ridges can be defined by injecting the gel into the lines. To achieve the optimal result, a combination of these steps is often used.
Shaping facial contours:
Many people are looking for a slightly fuller shape for their chin. Just a touch of additional volume can make an enormous difference, giving the face a fuller or more defined appearance. Or perhaps your patient wants a rounder, more sensual line along the cheeks to bring out that youthful innocence? Injected into the skin, Restylane Perlane corrects deep folds and lifts up the skin from the cheeks and chin, giving a new shape to the facial contours.
What is treatment like?
Each patient’s need for pain relief should be assessed prior to treatment. For some patients, pain relief might not be necessary when injecting into the skin for the correction of wrinkles and folds. The lips, however, are a highly sensitive part of the body and anesthesia is therefore usually required before treatment. This is achieved most effectively by a nerve block (to numb the lips) or by topical anesthesia (like Emla crème or lidocaine spray).
The correct injection technique and choice of tissue depth have an impact on the quality of the treatment and the duration of the effect.
Restylane is administered using the needle that is packed with each product. The injection technique with regard to the depth of the injection and the quantity administered may vary.
When injecting Restylane, four different techniques are recommended. Any of the techniques, or a combination, can be used. All techniques require injection with a needle, so for you, the patient, the technique used does not make a difference, only the results.
Treatment is relatively painless (using local anesthesia), effective, safe and takes approximately 30 minutes to perform. Immediately following treatment, you may resume regular activities.
How long does a Restylane treatment last?
In general, follow-up treatment is required after six to twelve months. Clinical trials reveal that Restylane is effective for up to one year after the treatment of wrinkles and up to six months when enhancing lips. Clinical experience also indicates that a touch-up treatment after two to four weeks and regular follow-up treatments will add to the duration of the treatment effect.
What type of results will you see?
Eliminated lines, smoothed wrinkles, enhanced facial contours and more sensual lips. With Restylane, you can enhance your quality of life by taking years off your facial appearance, virtually instantaneously.
It is, nevertheless important to know that the result directly after the treatment may not be the final result, depending on the extent of injection-related localized swelling. This is especially important after lip treatment. You should also know that touch-up treatment may be necessary to achieve full correction.
Restylane injections will not replace the need for facial rejuvenating procedures. The ideal look may be achieved by Restylane injections in conjunction with perhaps another injectable like Botox (see Botox page) or facial rejuvenating procedures like a facelift, eyelid surgery or laser resurfacing.
Where is the treatment done?
Restylane treatment is done at the Riley Surgery Center as an office procedure. There is no need for someone to take you home, you are perfectly able to do this yourself.
Are there any possible side effects?
After the injection, some minor injection-related reactions may occur. They include redness of the skin, swelling, pain, itching, bruising and tenderness at the injection site.
Reactions thought to be of a hypersensitivity (allergy to Restylane) nature have been reported in about one in every 2,000 treatments. They have consisted of swelling and induration at the implant site, sometimes with edema in the surrounding tissues. Redness, tenderness and, rarely, acne form papules may also occur. These reactions have started either shortly after injection or after a delay of two to four weeks and have generally been described as mild to moderate and self-limiting, with an average duration of two weeks. In pronounced cases, a short course of oral corticosteroids may prove effective.
In addition, rare cases (fewer than one in 15,000 treatments) of granuloma formation, superficial necrosis and urticaria (white heads) have been reported.
Restylane is a sensitive agent that requires specific production facilities, handling and administration (a trained physician). That's why the agent is pretty expensive. Beware of quacks who administer "Restylane" of undisclosed laboratories and offered at ridiculous low prices. Restylane administration at the Riley Surgery Center is performed by a trained physician, using the original Swedish manufactured Restylane that is properly handled.
The costs
Restylane treatment costs anywhere from US$ 300,00 to US$ 700,00 per treatment, depending on how many sites are necessary to inject. Initial consultation (US$ 50,00) is not charged if Restylane treatment is done immediately. Restylane treatment can also be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures, which are quoted separately. In addition, a Restylane maintenance program is offered at a 10% discount which can be paid monthly. Ask for it at our clinic.
